Scenic ADU - In Progress
A family of soon-to-be empty nesters looked to the sloping backyard of their home and saw a new beginning. They envisioned a separate haven, an ADU, that would serve as both a retreat for themselves and a welcoming space for their children when they returned for the holidays.
Limited by city regulations on the size of the new structure, we designed a sense of expansiveness that defied its modest footprint.
The solution was a series of generous outdoor decks that gracefully connected the main house to the new ADU. These decks extend the living and dining areas, opening onto sunny patios with sweeping views.
Adjacent to the primary bedroom, a lower-level deck offers a serene escape, complete with a plunge pool—a perfect spot for a refreshing dip to start the day. Meanwhile, the main outdoor dining and kitchen area was crafted to be the heart of holiday gatherings, ready to be filled with laughter and good food when the kids come home. And to make the journey between the two homes as easy and fun as possible, a whimsical funicular is proposed, a delightful touch that will make every trip a joyful one.
